FREE tutorial – learn Grasshopper for Rhino 5

Grasshopper

This tutorial is intended for students and professionals who wish to learn Grasshopper in Rhino 5 but do not have the necessary software installed yet. You should stop reading this post if you already have Grasshopper  and Rhino 5 running on your machine.

1. Install Rhino 5

    • Check that your machine is compatible with the System Requirements.
    • Download and install Rhino 5  trial for free. This version is the same as the commercial version except that it only saves 25 times (there is also an affordable student version available). This is actually not an issue as you can use Grasshopper as much as you like without saving any Rhino files. Please note that even though there is Rhino available for Mac OS X, Grasshopper is strictly a Windows plugin and will currently run on Apples only in Windows mode (check out Boot Camp).
    • Rhino 5 requires .NET framework 4.0 and should tell you if it is not installed on your computer. To be sure, you can download it from here.

2. Install Grasshopper

  •  Download and start the Grasshopper executable file.

NB! If you have previously installed Rhino 4 (and the latest release of Grasshopper), the chances are that you just need to upgrade your Rhino (see step 1) and everything will be done for you automatically. If not, you have to manually install the Grasshopper folder to Rhio 5 folder. Read more about manual installation.

3. Check that everything is OK

  • Start Rhino 5
  •  Inside Rhino, type Grasshopper in the Rhino command line (located at the top bar by default)
  • If you have any problems, you can check out the Grasshopper forum or post a comment below

4. Start using Grasshopper

  • There is a slightly outdated but otherwise great PDF tutorial available.
  • There are plenty of tutorials available on-line. Just google or bing or youtube it.
  • I will be constantly adding more tutorials to this blog. Subscribe for Email updates on your right and you will be notified automatically when new ones are published.

5. Enjoy!
